Air Hockey Tables: A Great Way To Celebrate

August 30th, 2010

If you want to have fun or celebrate a big event, air hockey tables are the answer. Whether your daughter has just come home from college or your whole family has gathered together for a reunion, you know something special is on the horizon. Whether it’s New Year’s Eve or the Fourth of July, gathering your friends and family together is always a good excuse for a celebration. Maybe you don’t even need a special reason to call up some folks and invite them over. No matter what the reason you’ll find that air hockey tables never disappoint.

Imagine challenging your competitive brother or uncle to a match in your basement. Or imagine teaming up with your son or daughter to take on the competition. You might even proudly watch while your kids conquer the neighboring kids. No matter who is available to play the competition can be fun and maybe just a bit fierce.

The good news about air hockey equipment is that mastering it doesn’t take a great deal of skill or experience. There’s no hassle about learning tons of complicated rules. You should start playing once you go over a few of the simple rules of the game.

* Rule 1 – The first player to score seven points is the winner. Setting the maximum higher than that means younger players might lose interest but a lower winning score reduces the challenge of the game.

* Rule 2 – You may strike the puck with any part of the mallet, but you cannot lift the mallet and place it on the top of the puck. This is what is called a topping. If you do this, then the other player automatically gains control over the puck. You can use the mallet to top the puck only if the puck is airborne.

* Rule 3 – You have the privilege to stand at any part of the table but don’t cross the center line. Keep in mind that you don’t want to place yourself where you leave your goal exposed and let your opponent score an easy point.

* Rule 4 – You have only seven seconds to hit the puck back once it crosses the center line into your side of the table. Otherwise, you lose control of the puck.

* Rule 5 – When you hit the goal you have ten seconds to repossess the puck and serve it back to you opponent across the air hockey table.

* Rule 6 – Each player gets a single chance for time out while playing, but only when the puck is on the other side of the table. These time outs can only last ten seconds.

* Rule 7 – The player’s arms, clothes cannot touch the puck, otherwise it is foul. But if the puck is airborne and touches the hand, clothes, or other parts of the player, it is not foul. When you foul, your opponent gets chance to serve.

Air Hockey tables bring families and friends together, ignite the fun and enjoyment of spending time together, and provides a great way to compete in a non-violent way. By understanding just a few simple rules, you can start having a great game that will help you have hours of fun and will brighten everyone’s day. Having air hockey tables in your game room is definitely a must.

The Awesome Fun Of Mastering Bubble Hockey

August 30th, 2010

Bubble hockey, which is also known as dome hockey, is a fast and interesting game and is completely different from foosball. In this game both hockey teams, as well the goalie, are controlled by dome hockey players. There are some set paths that are slide up and down by the players in the same way as it is done in real hockey.

Hockey Knowledge You Need

One should have knowledge of the game of ice hockey in order to play bubble hockey effectively. You don’t need to be an expert, of course, but it does help if you understand some of the moves involved in the game. For example, the game includes the wings which are playmakers who can pass the puck and take shots on their own. You need to know this and that these playmakers can go into corner positions in order to get the puck.

Additionally, you need to understand that the center player is working on both offense and defense. This also gives them the best chance of any player to make a shot. The defensemen are there to help the wings get the puck by shooting it into the corners. Of course, the goalie’s main job is to stop that puck from getting past him.

Sticky Situations

If the puck gets under the player’s feet, you need to get that puck back into your control. You can do that with the player’s body (in the game of bubble hockey but not in real hockey, of course) but you lose out on having good control over the puck. Instead, using the stick is the best way to pass or shoot that puck. To make that happen, you need to know when and how to finesse the puck and when and how to use power with the puck.

Comprehending the difference takes a lot of practice. You need to know how to gently move the player so the puck can be on the stick. Sudden movements at this point won’t help. Now when you need power, you have to wind up the player and flick your wrist so the player hits that puck with force. The mistake most beginners make is not hitting with sufficient force and, therefore, ending up taking blind shots at the net.

Balancing Offensive and Defensive Skills

Now that you understand the fundamentals of ice hockey and the difference between using finesse and power, you can start planning your offensive moves. First of all throw the puck to your left winger who can slide the puck over to the right winger. It is totally depending on the right winger to decide either to take shot or finesse the puck into the center. Prepare yourself for spring back if you are shooting the puck. You can put your opponent off guard by shooting the puck as soon as the center reaches it. You need to be imaginative only then you can try different moves and combinations.

Strong offence is of no use if you are not having strong defense. Your goalie, defensemen and your center play an important role whenever you are defending your net. Keep your goalie in the front and make efforts to deal with the shots. In order to cover opposing player’s wingers you have your defensemen. With the flick of your wrist, you can disrupt the passes to opponent and take the puck away from them. You can move the defensemen even at last moment to interfere in the passes and get the puck back. Different playing moves can be used depending upon the style and technique you prefer. One should use the center to attack the center of the opposition and block their shots.

By practicing these basics of dome hockey, you’ll quickly be able to master the game and conquer your friends. Don’t forget to spend some time mastering bubble hockey today.

The Ole Miss Rebels – A Long History Of Outstanding Results

August 30th, 2010

‘Ole Miss,’ as you may have guessed is the affectionate way the University of Mississippi is popularly referred to in that state. The Rebels are the team which represents the university in the NCAA Division I-A FBS. It is affiliated with the Southeastern Conference.

The University of Mississippi first created a football team in 1893. The move was encouraged by Dr. A. L. Bondurant who became the teams first coach and later the Dean of the school. The inaugural games saw Mississippi against 5 opponent teams. The first one they played against was the Southern Baptist University, now Union University, whom they shut off with a 54-0 score. This was in the same year the team was founded.

Football was suspended in Mississippi in 1897 due to rash of yellow fever and again in 1943, in preparation for the Second World War.

Selecting the annual national football champion is not the business of the NCAA. Many polling organizations publish their own opinions yearly concerning who is the best team. Public acceptance of those rankings will depend on the prestige of the polling body. Several minor polling outfits voted Ole Miss the National Champion in football for the years 1955, 1959, 1960 and 1962. But the major polls had other preferences. In general Ole Miss was placed in either second or third place by them. It was not until 2003 that the team officially received the title of National Champion, and this was by vote.

The team has two ‘firsts’ under its name. It was the first team to fly to the site of the game. This was in 1937 and the destination was Memphis, Tennessee. It was also the first team ever to have its game broadcast over the radio. The match concerned was their game with Memphis in 1948.

In 2007 Ole Miss hired its 36th football coach in the person of Houston Nutt. This came after Nutt, coaching the Arkansas Razorbacks, defeated Ole Miss just a few weeks previously. His first season secured for the team a record of 9-4. This was during the 2009 Cotton Bowl Classic. Among those defeated by the Rebels were the Florida Gators, the LSU Tigers and the Texas Tech Red Raiders. The Florida Gators were later proclaimed BCS National Champions.

The team engages in annual rivalry matches with old rivals. The Egg Bowl is a rivalry match between the Rebels and Mississippi State University. In these series, The Rebels lead with 60 wins as against State U’s 40 wins. The Magnolia Bowl is another such game, this time between the Rebels and Louisiana State University. LSU leads in this one with 55-39-4.

Another rivalry series is that played against the Vanderbilt University Commodores. The two teams are co-founders of the Southeastern Conference and this is one of the oldest rivalries of the Rebels. They have the lead with 42-13-2.

The team is ranked third in all time best football programs. It garnered 21 victories in 33 Bowl games. Ten of its members are member of the College Football Hall of Fame, 2 are included in the rosters of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, 3 are featured in the Helms Athletic Foundation Hall of Fame and one is with the National Quarterback Club Hall of Fame.

A Close Look At The Texas Longhorns

August 30th, 2010

The University of Texas at Austin is represented by Longhorns at the games hosted by the NCAA Division I. The team is currently in the Big 12 Conference although since the time of its creation, it has joined other conferences and even played independently. Over its lifetime the team has bagged 32 conference championships and has become nationwide champion four times. The distinction of being an All-American player was given to some 129 of its players. The Heisman Trophy was awarded twice to them, they have had Halls of Fame inductions numbering 19, 15 times for the College Football Hall of Fame and 4 times for the NFL Hall of Fame.

As of 2009, the all-time record of the team is third as far as number of wins is concerned. Their over-all record shows 845-318-33, a percentage winning of .720. Among its other distinctions are appearing second most frequently in bowl games, securing 8th place for games played, having been ranked in the top polls 8.5 times out of every ten rankings, finishing in top ten of 2 prestigious polls more than 33 % of the time and finishing in top 25 in nearly half of the polls.

The first University of Texas football team was launched in 1893, playing versus the Dallas Football club. That club was then adjudged the greatest in the state. The Texans determined to disprove that claim and did so with an upset victory of 18-16.

The team’s first coach was R. D. Wentworth who started out with a formidable play. He defeated the first six teams with a sweeping over-all score of 191-0. However, the team lost to Missouri by 28 points to their 0 points. Under Wentworth Texas scored a number of shutout victories, defeating Texas A&M in 1894 (38-0) and Arkansas in the same year (54-0). In 1900 they defeated Oklahoma (28-2). The over-all record for the team for this period was a spectacular 207-57-12.

The team then joined the Texas Intercollegiate Athletic Association. While with them, the team won two victories in 1913 and 1914. The following year the Longhorns switched to the Southwest Conference. By 1920, they managed to win the championship in that conference.

The team has won, all in all, 32 conference championships, the last three being in 1996, 2005 and 2009 when they had joined the Big 12 Conference. Its four national championships were taken in 1963, 1969, 1979 and 2005. In all but the 1970 win they grabbed the succeeding Bowl event.

They also grabbed three Bowl Championship Series games. These were in 2005, 2006 and 2009

All their coaches have managed to leave them with records of more wins than losses. This accounts, in part, for the fact that the team enjoys great popularity with football buffs.

Several major honors have been received by the team or their members. Among these are the Heisman Trophy for Most Outstanding Player, the Walter Camp Award for Player of the year, the Chic Harley Award for College Football Player of the Year, the Maxwell Award for Best Football Player and the AP Player of the Year for Most Outstanding Player.

New Things Are Happening At Ole Miss Rebels Fall Camp This Year

August 30th, 2010

Last week marked the start of Ole Miss Rebels journey leading to the 2010 football conference games. The activities in the camp are visible to outsiders from a distance and no remote communication devices are allowed. The team starts off with some days of warm-up practices. On Thursday, August 12, they wear their full equipment. Some new developments have happened.

First and foremost is the absence of their Offense Coordinator, Kent Austin who had earlier left for his job as head coach at Cornell University. Earlier this year, Coach Houston Nutt had signed in Dave Rader as the team’s co-offensive coordinator and quarterback’s coach.

The 52-year-old Rader was occupied as a businessman when Nutt approached him. He has accumulated 9 years in the position of assistant coach. He has also 12 years of experience as head coach. This year will be his fourth time in the Southeastern Conference. His last job in football was from 2003- 2006 as a member of coach Mike Shula’s staff who was them coaching Alabama. Rader is a mechanical engineering graduate of Tulsa U whom he played for as starting quarterback. He was made an inductee into the Independence Bowl Hall of Fame in 1999. Currently, Rader shares his position with fellow offensive coordinator Mike Markuson.

Just before fall camp opened Coach Nutt announced that 2007 Mr. Football, “Tig” Barksdale, was no longer with the team. Barksdale had been, earlier charged with DUI and driving without a license. Last spring, he was temporarily barred from the team for “violation of team rules.” However, the actual circumstances leading to his dismissal were not disclosed. The reason given for the action was because Barksdale needed to resolve some personal problems.

A lot of people among the some 400 guests watching the opening were there to see Jeremiah Masoli, a former star football player of Oregon. A total of six awards were received by him while there, among them the 2008 Holiday Bowl Most Valuable Player, the College Football Performance Awards of 2009 for Elite Nation and QB Performer and the College Football Awards of 2009 for Midseason Favorite. He was with that team until 2009.

He received 5 of his trophies in 2009. However, in January of 2010 he got into a tangle with the law for second-degree burglary. Because of that the team suspended him for the entire year. In June of the same year he was again convicted of drug and traffic related misdemeanors. That was when he was dismissed.

Coach Nutt has made it clear that under no circumstances is he going to tolerate any misbehavior from Masoli. However, if he keeps out of trouble while with the Rebels and gives a performance equal to his 2009 achievement with Oregon, he can continue playing with the Rebels for the entire season.

With only one football season left for him to play, Masoli’s stint with the Rebels is going to be short, that is unless he decides to enroll as freshman again. The move of Coach Nutt in accepting him might mean he wants the team to learn from Masoli’s technique before the athlete graduates.

Three junior players are being groomed for important positions in the lineup. They are Damien Jackson, Randall Mackey and Wayne Dorsey.

Sports Fans Will Love A Bronze Hockey Sculpture

August 29th, 2010

The Greeks and the Romans understood the relationship between art and athletics. It’s easy to understand why statues of the deities of the time were so beautiful. Models chosen to represent the gods were selected from among the top athletes of the day. Unfortunately the ancient Mediterranean civilizations did not have hockey. If they had you wouldn’t have had to wait until now to see a bronze hockey sculpture.

There is beauty in motion that artists have always been aware of and tried to capture and convey. Greek and Roman artists have left statues of wrestlers and discuss throwers frozen in a single instant in time. While stationary and seemingly trapped in stone each athlete’s pose recalls what came before and predicts what will happen next.

Most people do not think of hockey as a beautiful sport. Compared with the grace and elegance of figure skaters hockey player look like helmeted Teletubbies. People either celebrate or deplore hockey for its violence. In fact hockey players t could be compared to armed and armoured warriors, a subject that many artists have seen fit to immortalize in their art.

Where hockey players differ from traditional knights in armour is the speed at which they move. Moving at high speeds across the ice the human body adopts a different range of motion and a different relationship to gravity. The angles created by the moving body, the stick and the puck are unique to hockey.

Stereotypes would have people believing that art and sport are interests that are mutually exclusive. They are not of course although many people prefer one to the other. An artist who can see the beauty in athleticism can reveal it to someone who imagines beauty to be limited to flowers and still life studies of fruit.

An artist can watch a hockey game and see beyond the external trappings into the minds and hearts of the players. While an ordinary viewer might see only fist fights and bodies being thrown against walls. An artist will recognize that training and mental and physical preparation that have led up to those moments. To an artist a great hockey player might well be seen as a fellow artist.

Anyone who has played hockey or watched hockey or coached hockey can appreciate a study of an individual moment in a game. Someone who has never seen a hockey game could be fascinated by a statue that reveals a different world. Children learning to play hockey and dreaming of the big leagues as well as their parents can see a moment yet to be lived in a bronze hockey statue.

Free Adidas MiCoach App Goes Hand In Hand With Hardware

August 29th, 2010

Sports brand Adidas have recently released a range of fitness accessories called ‘miCoach’ which monitor heart rate, distance and speed when running. Unlike usual heart rate monitors, the data is not just displayed on a watch; instead they pair with software downloadable for free for all smartphones.

What separates the miCoach gadgets from the popular Nike+ pedometer is that they do not pair exclusively with Apple technology. Although the software for the iPhone is likely to be the most popular, the devices will also pair with an array of mp3 players and hardware.

Instead of charging a high price for the software, it is free to download from app stores and the website; this will most likely prove popular as it incorporates GPS enabled smartphones to allow fitness training without the devices.

Despite it’s the ability to use the software alone, the addition of heart rate and pace are much more effective in performance analysis, which Adidas hope will be an incentive to buy the full price gear.

The software in the app analyses data from the GPS, heart rate and footfall to determine how effective your training is, it will provide on the go feedback from a pre-recorded voice that can instruct you to pick up the pace, relax a little and will direct you through a predetermined, personalised training schedule.

Adidas have released the products in a bid to compete with rivals Nike over their Nike+ products. The Nike+ is much cheaper but has limited functions and only provides a basic analysis. The miCoach provides one of the most in depth analyses of any personal training device, data can be uploaded to an online database to track your progress and provide useful feedback.

If you want to prove how fit you are to your peers, there is an ability to upload data to Facebook. The results can be streamed wirelessly on the go so your friends can track where you are and how fast you have been running. Adidas hopes this will encourage users to train harder as they will feel the pressure of their friend’s judgement.

Due to their sponsorship of some very large footballing names, some stores are offering discounted miCoach equipment with the purchase of a pair of Adidas Predators and Manchester United Football Shirts.
